Will Iran withdraw from the NPT before 2027?: how this market works

18%geopoliticsUpdated 5 min ago

What you need to know

This market asks whether Iran will formally quit the main global nuclear weapons treaty before the end of 2026. The NPT, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, is the international agreement that commits member countries not to build nuclear weapons. A Yes means Iran sends an official written notice to the United Nations saying it is leaving. A No means Iran stays in the treaty, or at least never sends that formal letter. Leaving the NPT would be a major signal that Iran intends to pursue nuclear weapons without international oversight. For this to resolve Yes, the Iranian government must send a specific written notice to the United Nations, explicitly citing Article X of the NPT as its legal basis for leaving, before December 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. An informal threat, a speech, or a news report about intentions does not count. The notice must be official and explicit. The market uses credible news reporting to confirm whether that formal step actually happened. If no such letter is sent and confirmed, it resolves No. Recent headlines point to a serious escalation between the United States and Iran in mid-2026, including US military strikes, Iranian attacks that killed American service members, and congressional hearings about war funding. This matters because a major armed conflict could either push Iran toward formally leaving the NPT as a political statement, or make the diplomatic landscape too chaotic to predict. These events represent a notable rise in tensions, though no news yet confirms Iran has actually submitted or announced a formal withdrawal notice. The core uncertainty is that formal NPT withdrawal is a huge and rare step, but the geopolitical situation is unusually volatile right now. Iran has never withdrawn, and no country has done so under active military pressure in this way. On one hand, escalating conflict with the US could push Iran toward that line. On the other hand, Iran may prefer to keep ambiguity about its nuclear program rather than trigger even greater international isolation. The market prices this around 16%, meaning most participants see it as unlikely but not impossible given current tensions.

How this resolves

Resolves December 31, 2026

This market will resolve to "Yes" if the Islamic Republic of Iran formally notifies the United Nations of its decision to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), pursuant to Article X of the treaty by December 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No." To qualify, the Iranian government must issue an official written notice that explicitly states its intention to withdraw under Article X of the NPT.
