NATO article 5 before 2027?: how this market works
What you need to know
This market is asking whether any NATO country will officially trigger the alliance's collective defense clause before the end of 2026. Article 5 is the rule that says an attack on one NATO member is treated as an attack on all of them. It has only been invoked once in history, after the September 11 attacks in 2001. A Yes means some NATO country formally declares it has been attacked and calls on the whole alliance to respond together. A No means that does not happen. The market settles Yes if any NATO member officially invokes Article 5 between November 5, 2025 and December 31, 2026. The confirmation would come from NATO's own official channels at nato.int, or from a broad agreement among major credible news outlets reporting the same thing. If no invocation happens by midnight Eastern Time on December 31, 2026, it settles No. There is no partial credit: an attack, a threat, or a strong political statement that falls short of a formal invocation would not be enough. None of the provided news headlines relate to NATO, Article 5, or any military conflict involving alliance members. There is nothing in the recent news given here that speaks to this market. The kind of development that would matter is a serious armed attack on a NATO member country, or official statements from NATO governments about invoking collective defense. The market prices this at about 8%, meaning participants think it is quite unlikely but not impossible. The main honest uncertainty is the unpredictable nature of conflict escalation: the Russia-Ukraine war remains active near NATO's eastern border, and a stray missile, miscalculation, or deliberate provocation could change the picture quickly. Article 5 is also a political decision, not automatic, so even a real attack might not lead to a formal invocation depending on how governments respond.
