What will the NYT front-page headlines say this week? (July 20 - July 26): how this market works
What you need to know
This market is asking a very specific question: will certain words appear in printed New York Times front-page headlines during one particular week? There are three separate word bets running at once, each asking whether 'House', 'Hormuz', or 'China / Chinese' shows up in a headline on the physical front page of the NYT's New York edition between July 20 and July 26, 2026. Yes means the word appeared in a headline. No means it did not. Each term resolves Yes if it appears, in any capitalization or plural or possessive form, in a front-page headline of the printed New York edition of the NYT on any day that week. Only the physical New York edition counts, not the website or other regional prints. The key distinction: the word must be in a headline or qualifying sub-headline, not in photo captions, article body text, or pull quotes. The first daily print released each day is the only one that counts. Two pieces of recent news are directly relevant. First, oil prices have reportedly hit $100 a barrel, which connects closely to the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which a large share of the world's oil flows. Any major tension there tends to spike oil prices. Second, a report from July 25 says the US has identified China-linked spy sites in Cuba monitoring American military activity. That story could easily generate front-page coverage using the word 'China' or 'Chinese'. All three terms sit near 51%, meaning the market sees each as roughly a coin flip. The core challenge is that no one can know in advance exactly which stories the NYT editors will judge front-page worthy on any given day, or how they will word the headlines. 'House' is a very common English word and could appear in many contexts. 'Hormuz' and 'China' feel tied to live news, but editors might cover those stories without using those exact words in a headline. Seven daily front pages give multiple chances, but nothing is guaranteed.
