Will Russia capture Novodmytrivka by...?: how this market works

24%geopoliticsUpdated 4 min ago

What you need to know

This market asks whether Russian forces will physically take control of a specific road intersection inside the village of Novodmytrivka, in Ukraine's Sumy Oblast, by a given deadline. Sumy Oblast is inside Ukraine, near the Russian border, so this is asking about Russian territorial advance into Ukrainian-held ground. A Yes means Russian troops actually hold that crossroads. A No means Ukraine still holds it, or the fighting has not reached it, by the deadline. The market settles Yes if a specific map, published daily by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), colors that exact intersection red to show Russian control, and that shading holds through at least one full update cycle after it first appears. The two deadlines are July 31, 2026 and September 30, 2026. One important edge case: if a ceasefire or peace deal gives Russia real, physical control of that spot, that also counts as Yes, but a signed agreement alone does not. Russia must actually be on the ground there. None of the provided news headlines relate to Novodmytrivka or to ground fighting in Sumy Oblast. The only Ukraine item mentions a Russian missile attack on Kyiv, which is a different kind of event in a different location. To watch for news that would actually matter here, look for ISW or DeepStateMap reports specifically about Russian ground advances in Sumy Oblast. The July 31 deadline is priced at just 5%, meaning the market sees capture that soon as unlikely. The September 30 deadline sits at 25%, so capture within about 14 months is considered possible but far from certain. The main unknowns are battlefield momentum, whether a ceasefire interrupts fighting, and how well Ukrainian defenses hold in Sumy Oblast specifically. The pace of any advance in this area is genuinely difficult to predict, and the outcome could also hinge on broader diplomatic developments that nobody can foresee with confidence.
