Resolution Criteria

This market will resolve according to the title of the film with the highest 2026 gross according to the "Gross" column on https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/2026/?grossesOption=calendarGrosses once data for December 31 is made available. Note: This market is about the movie's domestic calendar gross in 2026 - dates outside of 2026 will not count toward this movie's gross. In the event of an exact tie the film that comes first alphabetically will be considered the winner. If there is no final data available by January 7, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, another credible resolution source will be chosen.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the heaviest-backed contender to be the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office in 2026, with Avengers: Doomsday the only other title drawing significant market interest. The market spans 28 outcomes, but volume is heavily concentrated on a small number of releases. Resolution is based on the domestic calendar gross recorded on Box Office Mojo for the full 2026 calendar year.

Market structure

The market covers 28 named film outcomes and resolves using the 'Gross' column on Box Office Mojo's 2026 calendar year page once December 31 data is available. Volume is heavily concentrated on one outcome, with a secondary contender drawing moderate interest and the remaining 26 titles collectively holding a small share. In the event of an exact tie, the title appearing first alphabetically wins. A fallback resolution source applies if Box Office Mojo data is unavailable by 7 January 2027.

Background

The domestic box office in 2026 is headlined by a dense slate of franchise sequels and reboots. Marvel Studios holds two major entries: Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday, both part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's ongoing Phase Six. Historically, MCU releases and Spider-Man films in particular have been among the most reliable box office performers in North America. The 2026 slate also includes animated sequels such as Toy Story 5, literary adaptations like The Odyssey, and franchise continuations across horror, science fiction, and fantasy genres. Domestic calendar gross measures only North American receipts earned between 1 January and 31 December 2026, meaning wide releases scheduled late in the year may have earnings split across the 2026 and 2027 calendar windows.

Key factors

Release timing is a central variable: a film opening in late 2026 will have fewer weeks to accumulate domestic gross within the calendar year. Competition for peak holiday and summer corridors — traditionally the most lucrative windows — will affect how multiple tentpoles share audience spend. Marketing budgets, critical reception, audience scores, and opening-weekend performance all feed into final gross trajectories. Franchise fatigue or enthusiasm following prior instalments shapes demand; the MCU's recent theatrical track record in particular will influence how Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday perform relative to each other and to the wider slate. Production delays, release date shifts, or unexpected theatrical disruptions could significantly reorder outcomes. Animated family releases benefit from broad demographic appeal and repeat viewership, which can sustain long theatrical runs. Any wide-release surprise hit not currently listed among the 28 named outcomes would not resolve this market unless it appears as a named outcome.

FAQ

How is the Highest Grossing Movie in 2026 market resolved?

The market resolves using the 'Gross' column on Box Office Mojo's 2026 calendar year page at boxofficemojo.com/year/2026/?grossesOption=calendarGrosses. Only domestic gross earned between 1 January and 31 December 2026 counts. If two films tie exactly, the title appearing first alphabetically is declared the winner.

When does the Highest Grossing Movie in 2026 market resolve?

Resolution is triggered once Box Office Mojo publishes final data including 31 December 2026. If that data is unavailable by 11:59 PM ET on 7 January 2027, an alternative credible source will be used to determine the result.

What happens if a film's biggest earnings fall outside the 2026 calendar year?

Only domestic gross earned within the 2026 calendar year is counted. Revenue from screenings before 1 January or after 31 December 2026 is excluded. A film opening in late December may therefore have its total theatrical run split across two calendar-year measurements.

What does the market currently show?

Volume is heavily concentrated on Spider-Man: Brand New Day as the single most-backed outcome, with Avengers: Doomsday the only other title drawing notable interest. Titles such as Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey hold modest shares, while the remaining outcomes attract minimal volume.
