Resolution Criteria
This market will resolve according to the official UFC Welterweight division champion on December 31, 2026 at 12:00 PM ET. Only official UFC division champions will count. Interim champions will not count. If the relevant belt is vacant at this market’s check time, or there is otherwise no champion in the specified division, this market will resolve to “Other”. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the UFC (https://www.ufc.com/athletes).
Islam Makhachev is the heaviest-backed contender to hold the UFC Welterweight title at the end of 2026, with a substantial concentration of market volume behind him. Carlos Prates, Ian Machado Garry, and Michael Morales form a secondary cluster of contenders with meaningful but smaller backing. The market resolves according to the official UFC Welterweight champion as listed on ufc.com at 12:00 PM ET on 31 December 2026.
Market structure
Nineteen named outcomes are in play, though volume is heavily concentrated on a small cluster. Islam Makhachev commands the dominant share, with Carlos Prates, Ian Machado Garry, and Michael Morales holding the next largest portions. The remaining field — including former champions and rising contenders — carries minimal collective volume. Resolution is drawn from official UFC athlete records, with an 'Other' outcome available if the belt is vacant or held by an unlisted fighter.
Background
The UFC Welterweight division has been one of the most competitive in the organisation's history, having seen multiple champions across the past decade. Belal Muhammad held the title through 2024 and into 2025, following his defeat of Leon Edwards. The 170-pound division has historically been characterised by long reigns interrupted by surprise upsets, and the title picture has become fluid following a series of high-profile bouts and contender performances in 2025. Islam Makhachev, known primarily as Lightweight champion, has been discussed in coverage of potential cross-divisional moves. Carlos Prates and Ian Machado Garry have emerged as prominent contenders through strong runs in the division, while Michael Morales has attracted attention through an undefeated UFC record.
Key factors
Several structural variables will shape resolution. Whether Islam Makhachev moves up from Lightweight to campaign at Welterweight is a critical dependency — a bout booked or cancelled at 170 pounds would substantially affect his position. Interim title fights, which do not count for resolution, could influence the contender picture without directly determining the outcome. Injury to a top contender, a surprise upset in a title defence, or the UFC scheduling decisions around event cards could all alter who holds the belt by 31 December 2026. The division's history of competitive depth means rankings can shift significantly within a single event cycle. Additionally, if the title is vacated due to a champion relinquishing the belt or failing to defend, the market resolves to 'Other', making vacancy a non-trivial contingency given the cross-divisional movement being discussed in coverage of current champions.
