Resolution Criteria

This market will resolve to “Yes” if, according to the ISW map, Russia captures the Kupyansjk-Vuzlovij railroad station located between Zaliznychna Vulytsia and Zaliznychnykiv Ploshcha (49.654359° N, 37.644326° E) by February 28, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET. The railroad station will be considered captured if any part of the train station icon is shaded red on the ISW map (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36a7f6a6f5a9448496de641cf64bd375) by the resolution date. If the area is not shaded red by February 28, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, the market will resolve to “No”. For any change on the ISW map to qualify for this market’s resolution, the relevant shading indicating Russian control must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle. If ISW skips a day, shading must persist until the next finalized ISW update is published, regardless of the date. Any continuous shading which reflects either “Assessed Russian Control”, “Assessed Russian Advance In Ukraine”, or “Assessed Russian Gains in the Past 24 Hours” will qualify. “Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas in Ukraine” will not qualify. If Russia comes into control of this territory as a result of a negotiated settlement, this will qualify for a 'Yes' resolution, regardless of whether it is shaded red in the ISW map. An announcement of a negotiated settlement that gives Russia de jure control will not qualify. Actual control must be established. Once Russia captures the railroad station, any subsequent loss of control will not be considered towards the resolution of this market. If the ISW map is rendered unavailable, information from DeepStateMap (https://deepstatemap.live/) may be used. If information from both the ISW and DeepStateMap are rendered permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting may be used. Note: Any temporary glitches or errors in the map will not be considered.

This prediction market asks whether Russian forces will capture the Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi railroad station — a specific infrastructure point in eastern Ukraine — by 28 February 2026, with the primary resolution source being the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) interactive map. The market currently has four outcome windows, with volume heavily concentrated on the latest deadline of 31 May, reflecting the difficulty of a near-term Russian capture. Resolution requires confirmed, persistent red shading on the ISW map indicating Russian control.

Market structure

The market offers four resolution windows tied to different capture deadlines, with the 31 May 2026 outcome drawing the heaviest concentration of volume. Resolution is determined by the ISW Ukraine map shading at the coordinates 49.654359° N, 37.644326° E: any qualifying red shading (Assessed Russian Control, Advance, or Gains in Past 24 Hours) must persist through one full subsequent ISW daily update cycle. Infiltration-only shading does not qualify. A fallback to DeepStateMap or credible reporting consensus applies if ISW becomes unavailable.

Background

Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi is the southern, railway-junction district of the broader Kupiansk urban area in Kharkiv Oblast, northeastern Ukraine. The town sits astride a critical rail hub that historically served as a logistics node for the region. Russian forces briefly occupied the wider Kupiansk area in early 2022 before Ukrainian forces retook it during the Kharkiv counteroffensive in September 2022. Since late 2023, Russian forces have been applying sustained pressure along the Kupiansk axis, gradually advancing through outlying villages and approaching the town's eastern and southern approaches. The railroad station at the heart of this market is a symbolically and operationally significant target, as its capture would signal a meaningful Russian penetration into the settlement itself. The front line in this sector has been characterised by slow, attritional progress rather than rapid operational manoeuvre.

Key factors

The pace of Russian advance along the Kupiansk axis depends on several interacting variables. Ukrainian defensive depth and reinforcement capacity in Kharkiv Oblast directly conditions how quickly Russian forces can close on the station coordinates. Russian artillery and glide-bomb superiority has historically accelerated positional gains in this sector, but urban terrain complicates exploitation. The timing and scale of any broader Russian offensive operations elsewhere on the front can draw resources toward or away from the Kupiansk direction. Seasonal factors — ground conditions affecting mechanised movement — influence the tempo of advances in winter and spring windows. A negotiated ceasefire or settlement, if it grants Russia de jure and de facto control of the station area, would also trigger Yes resolution independently of the ISW map. Conversely, any Ukrainian spoiling offensive or counter-attack could push the front line away from the station and reduce the probability of capture within the remaining resolution windows.

FAQ

How is the Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi railroad station capture market resolved?

Resolution requires the ISW Ukraine interactive map to shade any part of the railroad station icon red — indicating Assessed Russian Control, Advance, or Gains in the Past 24 Hours — at coordinates 49.654359° N, 37.644326° E. That shading must persist through one complete subsequent ISW daily update cycle to qualify. Infiltration-area shading alone does not count.

When does the Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi capture market resolve?

The market has four outcome windows. The final deadline is 31 May 2026. Earlier windows correspond to 28 February 2026 and intermediate dates. If qualifying ISW shading appears before any deadline and persists through the next update cycle, the market resolves Yes for the earliest applicable window.

What happens if the ISW map is unavailable or stops publishing updates?

If the ISW map becomes permanently unavailable, DeepStateMap may be used as the primary source. If both sources are permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting will be used. Temporary glitches or single-day gaps in ISW publishing do not trigger the fallback; shading must simply persist until the next confirmed ISW update.

What does the Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi market currently show?

Volume is heavily concentrated on the 31 May 2026 outcome, the latest available deadline, suggesting traders view capture within the near-term windows as a low-probability scenario. The earlier February 2026 deadline carries minimal volume, reflecting the assessed difficulty of a rapid Russian advance to the station coordinates.
