Ebola pandemic in 2026?: how this market works
What you need to know
This market asks whether Ebola will become so widespread in 2026 that the WHO officially calls it a pandemic. A Yes means the WHO uses the specific word 'pandemic' to describe an Ebola outbreak in an official statement before the end of 2026. A No means that never happens, either because no major outbreak occurs, or because any outbreak stays contained enough that the WHO never applies that label to it. This market settles Yes only if the WHO explicitly uses the word 'pandemic' to describe Ebola in an official communication, such as a press briefing, report, or public statement, before December 31, 2026. One important edge case: if the WHO declares a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (their highest formal alert, used for serious but contained outbreaks) without also calling it a pandemic, that alone does not count. The word 'pandemic' must appear clearly in official WHO language. None of the provided news headlines relate to Ebola or any infectious disease outbreak. There is no recent news here that speaks to this market. The kind of development that would matter is a WHO situation report describing a fast-spreading, multi-country Ebola outbreak, or an official WHO press briefing using the word 'pandemic' in connection with Ebola. The market prices this at around 4%, reflecting that an Ebola pandemic is historically very unlikely. Ebola outbreaks do occur periodically, mostly in Central and West Africa, but the virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, which makes it far harder to sustain global spread than airborne diseases. The main uncertainty here is not a genuine two-sided debate: it is simply the small but real chance that something unexpected changes the situation, such as a large uncontrolled outbreak or a mutation affecting transmission.
