How many UK Prime Ministers by end of 2027?: how this market works
What you need to know
This market is asking how many different people will have served as UK Prime Minister between when this market was created and the end of 2027. It is not asking how many times the role changed hands, but how many distinct individuals held the job. So if the same person left and came back, they would still count as one. A result of 2 means only Keir Starmer and one other person served. A result of 3 means a third distinct individual also became PM before 2027 ends. The market settles on a number: 2, 3, or 4 or more unique people who were formally appointed Prime Minister by the King between the market's start and December 31, 2027. The key rules are: caretaker or interim PMs do not count, someone returning to the role a second time still counts as only one person, and Keir Starmer is already counted as one. The source of truth is official UK government records, or a clear consensus from credible news outlets. This is significant: a July 2026 headline states that Andy Burnham became UK Prime Minister after meeting King Charles. If accurate, that means the count is already at 2 people (Starmer and Burnham) as of mid-2026. That would put this market firmly in the '2' outcome territory for now, with the remaining question being whether any further change happens before the end of 2027. The market prices '2' at around 87%, reflecting that two PMs have apparently already served and a third would require another leadership change before 2028. The real uncertainty is simply whether something unexpected, like a political crisis, a resignation, or a snap election producing a new leader, happens in the roughly 18 months remaining. That is hard to rule out entirely, but the market treats it as unlikely. The main unknown is whether British politics stays stable through 2027.
