Iran successfully targets shipping by...?: how this market works
What you need to know
This market asks whether Iran's own military forces will physically attack or seize a commercial ship before the end of August 2026. A Yes means Iranian forces directly hit a cargo ship, tanker, or similar civilian vessel with a missile, drone, bomb, or boarding operation. A No means none of that happens, or it happens but cannot be confirmed as Iran's direct action. Attacks carried out by groups like the Houthis or Hezbollah do not count, even if Iran supports them. The market settles Yes only if Iranian forces, acting directly, strike or forcibly board a commercial ship and credible reporting confirms it. The action must be claimed by Iran or clearly traced to Iranian forces, not proxy groups. Intercepted missiles that never actually hit the ship do not count. If something happens but blame is unclear at the deadline of August 31, 2026, the market can stay open three extra days. If attribution is still unconfirmed after that, it resolves No. The news from July 20, 2026 shows a sharp escalation: the US reportedly struck Iran, and the US lost three service members in related violence. Iran is also said to be receiving de-escalation proposals from mediators. This matters because it sets the backdrop of active military tension, which is directly relevant to whether Iran might take action against shipping as a pressure tactic or retaliatory step. The market is priced at 97%, meaning participants collectively see a No outcome as very unlikely. At that level, the main remaining uncertainty is not whether two equal sides exist, it is simply whether the unexpected happens: a ceasefire or diplomatic deal could change Iran's calculus quickly, and the strict attribution rules mean an ambiguous incident might still resolve No. The de-escalation talks in the news introduce a real, if currently small, possibility that tensions cool before the deadline.
