Resolution Criteria

This market will resolve to “Yes” if, according to the ISW map, Russia captures the intersection at 48.494433° N, 37.377320° E in Sofiivka, Donetsk Oblast, by February 28, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET. The intersection will be considered captured if any part of the intersection is shaded red on the ISW map (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36a7f6a6f5a9448496de641cf64bd375) by the resolution date. If the area is not shaded red by the specified date, the market will resolve to “No”. For any change on the ISW map to qualify for this market’s resolution, the relevant shading indicating Russian control must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle. If ISW skips a day, shading must persist until the next finalized ISW update is published, regardless of the date. Any continuous shading which reflects either “Assessed Russian Control”, “Assessed Russian Advance In Ukraine”, or “Assessed Russian Gains in the Past 24 Hours” will qualify. “Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas in Ukraine” will not qualify. If Russia comes into control of this territory as a result of a negotiated settlement, this will qualify for a 'Yes' resolution, regardless of whether it is shaded red in the ISW map. An announcement of a negotiated settlement which gives Russia de jure control will not qualify. Actual control must be established. Once Russia captures the intersection, any subsequent loss of control will not be considered towards the resolution of this market. If the ISW map is rendered unavailable, information from DeepStateMap (https://deepstatemap.live/) may be used. If information from both the ISW and DeepStateMap are rendered permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting may be used. Note: Any temporary glitches or errors in the map will not be considered.

This prediction market asks whether Russian forces will capture a specific intersection in Sofiivka, Donetsk Oblast, by set monthly deadlines, with volume heavily concentrated on the June 2026 outcome. The market tracks a precise geographic coordinate (48.494433° N, 37.377320° E) and resolves based on ISW map shading rather than battlefield claims. The heaviest-backed outcome among the visible options is the June 30 deadline, though volume across all five outcomes remains broadly distributed at low levels.

Market structure

The market offers five outcome windows, each representing a distinct monthly deadline for Russian capture of the specified intersection. Volume is sparse overall, with the June 30 outcome the most heavily backed among disclosed options and the May 31 outcome carrying minimal backing. Resolution requires persistent ISW red shading across at least one full daily update cycle, or confirmed actual control via negotiated settlement. The primary resolution source is the ISW ArcGIS story map, with DeepStateMap as fallback.

Background

Sofiivka is a settlement in Donetsk Oblast situated within the broader Pokrovsk axis, an area of sustained Russian offensive pressure throughout 2024 and into 2025. The Pokrovsk direction has been among the most actively contested fronts in eastern Ukraine, with Russian forces making incremental gains across a wide front. Sofiivka's position places it within a zone where Russian forces have been attempting to expand westward and consolidate control over road and settlement networks. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) produces daily assessed control maps used by analysts, journalists, and prediction markets as a standardised reference for territorial changes, making its mapping conventions directly consequential for how this market resolves.

Key factors

The pace of Russian advance toward and through Sofiivka will depend on several interacting variables. Ukrainian defensive depth and the availability of reserves on the Pokrovsk axis will directly influence whether Russian forces can reach and hold the specific intersection. Seasonal conditions — ground hardness in winter versus mud seasons in spring — affect mechanised movement and have historically shaped the tempo of advances in eastern Ukraine. Broader ceasefire or negotiated settlement discussions, which have been a recurring feature of diplomatic reporting, could affect resolution independently of battlefield movement, since actual establishment of control under a settlement also qualifies. The ISW's mapping methodology is conservative: shading must reflect assessed control or advances, not infiltration, and must persist through a full update cycle, meaning fleeting tactical incursions would not trigger resolution. Any gap or outage in ISW publication triggers a fallback to DeepStateMap, introducing a secondary source's differing methodology.

FAQ

How is the Sofiivka intersection capture market resolved?

The market resolves 'Yes' if the ISW Ukraine map shades the intersection at 48.494433° N, 37.377320° E red — reflecting assessed Russian control or advances — persistently across at least one full ISW daily update cycle. Infiltration-only shading does not qualify. Actual control established via negotiated settlement also triggers 'Yes' resolution.

When does the Sofiivka capture market resolve?

Each outcome corresponds to a specific monthly deadline. The May 31 outcome resolves at 11:59 PM ET on 28 February 2026 per the stated criteria, with later monthly outcomes extending through the visible June 30 window and beyond. The overall market deadline is 31 May 2026 UTC.

What happens if the ISW map is unavailable when the deadline arrives?

If the ISW ArcGIS map becomes unavailable, DeepStateMap serves as the fallback resolution source. If both sources are permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting may be used. Temporary glitches or map errors do not affect resolution and are disregarded.

What does the Sofiivka market currently show?

Volume is heavily concentrated on the June 30 outcome, which is the most heavily backed of the disclosed options. The May 31 outcome carries minimal backing. The overall distribution suggests the market treats near-term capture as a low-probability scenario, with slightly more weight placed on the later deadline.
