Resolution Criteria
This market will resolve to “Yes” if, according to the ISW map, Russia captures any territory of Borova (49.37457173620971, 37.62233412539868) by December 31, 2025, at 11:59 PM ET. Territory will be considered captured if any part of Borova is shaded under a below specified layer on the ISW map (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36a7f6a6f5a9448496de641cf64bd375) by the resolution date. Otherwise, the market will resolve to “No”. For any change on the ISW map to qualify for this market’s resolution, the relevant shading indicating Russian control must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle. If ISW skips a day, shading must persist until the next finalized ISW update is published, regardless of the date. Any continuous shading which reflects either "Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas in Ukraine", “Assessed Russian Control”, “Assessed Russian Advance In Ukraine”, or “Assessed Russian Gains in the Past 24 Hours” will qualify. Once a qualifying condition is met, any subsequent loss of control will not be considered towards the resolution of this market. If Russia comes into control of the specified territory as a result of a negotiated settlement, this will qualify for a 'Yes' resolution, regardless of whether it is shaded red in the ISW map. However, an announcement of a negotiated settlement that gives Russia de jure control will not qualify. Actual control must be established. The primary resolution source for this market will be the ISW Ukraine map. If the ISW map is rendered unavailable, information from DeepStateMap (https://deepstatemap.live/) may be used. If information from both the ISW and DeepStateMap are rendered permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting may be used. Note: Any temporary glitches or errors in the map will not be considered.
Prediction market trading on whether Russia will capture any part of Borova, a settlement in Kharkiv Oblast, by 31 May 2026 shows volume heavily concentrated on a late-deadline outcome, with the heaviest-backed single outcome being the May 2026 window. The market resolves using the ISW Ukraine conflict map as its primary source, requiring Russian-controlled shading to persist through at least one full ISW daily update cycle. Overall sentiment across the market's five outcomes reflects significant uncertainty about the timeline of any Russian advance into Borova.
Market structure
The market offers five outcome windows tied to different resolution dates, all contingent on ISW map shading showing Russian control of any part of Borova (coordinates 49.37457, 37.62233) by the respective deadline. Volume is heavily concentrated on the latest available outcome, May 2026, with earlier windows carrying minimal backing. Resolution requires persistent ISW shading — not a single update — confirming Russian infiltration, control, advance, or gains. A negotiated settlement establishing actual control also qualifies. Fallback sources are DeepStateMap and then credible reporting consensus.
Background
Borova is a settlement in Kharkiv Oblast, eastern Ukraine, situated in territory that has seen sustained pressure along Russia's northeastern axis of advance since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Kharkiv Oblast was partially occupied in the early weeks of the war before Ukrainian forces recaptured significant ground in a September 2022 counteroffensive. Since then, the front line in this region has remained contested, with incremental Russian advances and Ukrainian defensive operations characterising the operational tempo. Borova's position near the Oskil River corridor makes it strategically relevant to Russian efforts to consolidate control in Kharkiv and Luhansk oblasts. The broader diplomatic environment — including intermittent ceasefire discussions — adds a further layer of uncertainty to near-term territorial outcomes.
Key factors
The pace of Russian advance toward Borova depends on several intersecting variables. First, the overall operational tempo along the northeastern front: sustained Russian pressure in the Kupyansk and Lyman directions could create conditions for flanking movements toward Borova, while Ukrainian defensive reinforcement could arrest progress. Second, Ukrainian manpower and materiel availability, including Western military aid flows, directly affects the capacity to hold contested positions. Third, any negotiated ceasefire or settlement framework — even a partial one — could freeze front lines in place, preventing resolution regardless of prior momentum. Fourth, the resolution mechanic itself requires ISW to confirm and sustain shading, meaning temporary or disputed territorial changes that are later reversed would not trigger a Yes outcome. Fifth, seasonal and logistical factors — terrain conditions, supply lines, and the broader campaign calendar — influence when offensive operations are feasible in this part of the front.
FAQ
How is the Borova capture market resolved?
The market resolves Yes if the ISW Ukraine conflict map shows Russian-controlled shading covering any part of Borova that persists through at least one full subsequent ISW daily update cycle. A negotiated settlement establishing actual Russian control also qualifies. Temporary map glitches or shading that does not persist do not count.
When does the Borova prediction market resolve?
The final resolution deadline is 31 May 2026. Earlier outcome windows exist within the market's five-outcome structure. If qualifying ISW shading appears and persists before any given deadline, the corresponding outcome resolves Yes at that point.
What happens if the ISW map becomes unavailable before resolution?
If the ISW map is rendered unavailable, DeepStateMap serves as the fallback source. If both sources are permanently unavailable, resolution falls back to a consensus of credible reporting. Temporary map errors or glitches do not trigger the fallback mechanism.
What does the Borova market currently show?
Trading is heavily concentrated on the May 2026 deadline outcome, which carries the most volume among the five available windows. Earlier deadline outcomes carry very limited backing, reflecting broad uncertainty about whether and when any Russian advance into Borova might materialise.
