Resolution Criteria

This market will resolve to “Yes” if Israel initiates a major closure of its airspace by the specified date, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. A “major closure” is defined as a broad closure, cancellation, or complete suspension of commercial aviation across the entirety of Israeli civilian airspace or a region encompassing a majority of Israeli civilian airspace, including commercial flights transiting, arriving in, and departing from that airspace. A qualifying closure must apply generally to all flights across Israel or a qualifying subset of Israeli airspace. Limited cancellations, delays, temporary ground stops or isolated regional closures will not qualify. Limited exceptions to a broad closure, however, will not disqualify such a closure from counting (e.g. exceptions for certain pre-approved flights may be permitted). Warnings, No-Fly-Zones, flight suspensions, or other flight restrictions imposed by airlines or countries other than Israel will not be sufficient for a “Yes” resolution. Airspace closures which occur solely due to weather conditions will not qualify. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from Israeli aviation authorities; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.

This prediction market asks whether Israel will initiate a major closure of its airspace by specified dates, with the heaviest volume concentrated on later deadlines. The market is structured across five outcomes tied to different cut-off dates, with weight broadly shifting toward the longer-horizon options. Resolution requires an official, Israel-initiated broad suspension of commercial aviation across all or a majority of Israeli civilian airspace, confirmed by Israeli aviation authorities or a consensus of credible reporting.

Market structure

The market offers five outcomes, each representing a different deadline by which Israel must initiate a qualifying airspace closure. Volume is more heavily concentrated on the later dates, suggesting a broadly distributed picture rather than a tight two-horse race. Resolution requires an official Israeli authority action — not airline or foreign-government restrictions — and excludes weather-driven closures and limited or regional suspensions. Each outcome resolves independently at 11:59 PM ET on its respective date.

Background

Israel's airspace has been subject to significant disruption since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, during which several airlines suspended services and Israel temporarily restricted access to Ben Gurion International Airport. A further episode occurred in April 2024, when Iran launched a large-scale drone and missile attack against Israeli territory, prompting a brief but widely reported closure of Israeli airspace. These events have made Israeli airspace closures a recurring subject of geopolitical and aviation risk monitoring. The market reflects continued uncertainty about the trajectory of the regional security environment and its potential to force Israeli authorities to suspend civilian aviation on a broad scale again.

Key factors

The primary driver of a qualifying closure would be an escalation in active hostilities involving Israel, particularly any attack — or credible threat of attack — that compels Israeli aviation authorities to act unilaterally. Iran's missile and drone capabilities, Hezbollah activity in the north, and the broader trajectory of the Gaza conflict all represent potential triggers. Diplomatic developments, including any ceasefire agreements or deterioration in negotiations, could shift the baseline security environment materially. The definition of a qualifying closure is narrowly drawn: it must be Israel-initiated, broad in geographic scope, and not weather-related. This means escalatory events that prompt only airline-side cancellations or foreign no-fly-zone declarations would not resolve the market. The gap between earlier and later deadlines means that each passing date without a qualifying event shifts probability weight toward the remaining longer-horizon outcomes. Any confirmed official Israeli closure announcement would cascade across all unresolved outcomes simultaneously.

FAQ

How is the Israel airspace closure market resolved?

The market resolves 'Yes' if Israeli aviation authorities initiate a broad closure covering all or a majority of Israeli civilian airspace by the specified date. The primary source is official Israeli aviation authority communications, with a consensus of credible reporting as a fallback. Airline-only suspensions, foreign no-fly zones, weather closures, and limited regional stops do not qualify.

When does each outcome in this market resolve?

Each outcome resolves at 11:59 PM ET on its named date — 24 May, 31 May, 15 June, and 30 June respectively, with a fifth outcome also in play. If a qualifying closure occurs before a given deadline, all outcomes with that deadline or later would resolve 'Yes'; outcomes with earlier deadlines that have already passed would resolve 'No'.

What happens if airlines cancel flights to Israel but the Israeli government does not close airspace?

That scenario would not qualify for a 'Yes' resolution. The market explicitly excludes flight suspensions, warnings, or no-fly zones imposed by airlines or foreign governments. Only a direct, Israel-initiated broad closure of civilian airspace counts. Airline-driven cancellations, however widespread, are insufficient on their own.

What does the Israel airspace closure market currently show?

Volume is more heavily concentrated on the longer-dated outcomes, with the June deadlines the most heavily backed. The shorter near-term deadlines carry notably lower weight, reflecting the market's current view that if a qualifying closure occurs, it is less certain to happen within the immediate window.
