Houthi military action against Saudi Arabia by...?: how this market works

48%geopoliticsUpdated 5 min ago

What you need to know

This market asks whether the Houthi movement, based in Yemen, will successfully land a strike on Saudi Arabian soil before the deadline. A Yes means a missile or drone actually hits Saudi territory. A No means no such strike happens, or any attempt is intercepted and never makes contact with the ground inside Saudi Arabia. For Yes, a Houthi drone or missile must physically impact Saudi land or inland waters before 11:59 PM local time on the specified date. Intercepted munitions do not count, even if debris falls. Neither naval attacks, rocket artillery, nor threats count. The two dates in the market represent two separate deadlines: July 24 (currently at 13%) and July 31 (currently at 45%). Resolution relies on a consensus of credible reports, Saudi officials, and Houthi statements. No recent news directly shows a Houthi strike on Saudi land. What the headlines do show is active Houthi military pressure in the region: a Saudi tanker was attacked at sea on July 23, and Houthis warned ships away from Red Sea routes. Naval attacks on ships, however, do not qualify under the resolution criteria, so these events alone would not trigger a Yes. The biggest challenge is that the conflict situation can shift quickly and without warning. Saudi Arabia and the Houthis have had periods of informal calm followed by sudden escalation. Whether the Houthis choose to target Saudi land specifically, rather than ships or other targets, depends on political calculations that outsiders cannot easily read. The strict definition of what counts, especially excluding intercepted munitions, adds another layer: even an attempt might not resolve as Yes.
