Will Russia target Kyiv by...?: how this market works

100%geopoliticsUpdated 3 min ago

What you need to know

This market asks whether Russia will launch a serious aerial or missile attack aimed at Kyiv before a specific deadline. A Yes means Russia fires cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, air-launched drones, or drops bombs on the city. A No means none of that happens before the cutoff. Small drones, cyberattacks, and artillery do not count, even if they cause damage closer to the front lines. The market settles Yes if even a single qualifying strike, meaning a missile, bomb, or air-launched drone directed at Kyiv, is confirmed by Ukrainian or Russian official sources or a consensus of credible journalists before August 7 or August 14, depending on which version you are watching. Critically, the strike does not need to hit or cause damage: intercepted missiles still count. Conflicting reports can extend the window by up to three full calendar days past the deadline. None of the provided news headlines are directly relevant to Russian military activity against Kyiv. One headline about rising demand for Patriot air-defense missiles does touch on the broader Ukraine conflict, but it contains no specific information about recent strikes on the capital. To follow this market, the most useful things to watch are Ukrainian air-raid alerts, Ukrainian air force reports, and wire-service reporting from Kyiv. The market is priced high, around 87% for the August 14 version, which means participants broadly expect at least one qualifying strike before that date. Russia has struck Kyiv repeatedly throughout the war, so the historical pattern is what drives that confidence. The real uncertainty is not really 'will Russia ever strike' but rather 'will there happen to be a qualifying strike within this specific window,' since a ceasefire, a negotiation pause, or simply a quiet stretch could push the outcome to No.
