9.0 or above earthquake before 2027?: how this market works
What you need to know
This market asks whether an extremely powerful earthquake, one of the strongest possible, will strike anywhere on Earth before the end of 2026. A magnitude 9.0 is not just a big earthquake: it is a truly catastrophic one, in the same class as the 2011 Tohoku quake in Japan and the 2004 Indian Ocean quake that triggered a massive tsunami. A Yes means at least one quake that powerful happens by December 31, 2026. A No means no quake reaches that threshold in that window. The market settles Yes if the USGS, the official U.S. government agency that tracks global earthquakes, records at least one quake of magnitude 9.0 or higher between December 8, 2025 and December 31, 2026. The USGS is the sole authority here. One important detail: after any large quake, scientists sometimes revise the magnitude up or down. This market waits 24 hours after a qualifying quake is recorded before settling, so a last-minute revision still counts. If no such quake appears, it resolves No. No relevant recent news was provided for this market. The kind of development that would matter here is any major seismic event approaching or exceeding magnitude 8.5, since scientists would then be watching closely for aftershocks or related activity. In general, magnitude 9.0 earthquakes are rare enough that there is rarely a clear warning sign before one occurs. The core difficulty is that earthquake prediction is genuinely unsolved science. Nobody can reliably forecast when or where a magnitude 9.0 will strike. Historically, these events happen only a few times per century, which is why the market prices this at just 9% even across a 13-month window. The uncertainty is mostly about a rare, sudden, unpredictable event, not about competing interpretations. The main honest question is simply whether a once-in-a-generation quake happens to fall within this specific window.
