Will Russia capture Novyi Donbas by...?: how this market works

38%geopoliticsUpdated 3 min ago

What you need to know

This market asks whether Russian forces will take control of a specific road intersection inside the village of Novyi Donbas, in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region, by a given deadline. A Yes means Russian troops physically hold that exact crossroads. A No means Ukrainian forces still hold it, or the frontline has not reached it by the deadline. Think of it as a very precise pin on a map: not the whole village, not the broader area, just one specific intersection. The market settles Yes if a respected conflict-tracking organization called ISW (Institute for the Study of War) colors that specific intersection red on its daily map, showing Russian control, and that coloring holds through at least one full day of updates. The deadline for the October version is October 31, 2026, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time, and for the August version, August 31, 2026. One important edge case: if a peace deal gives Russia actual physical control of the area, that also counts as Yes, even without the red shading. But a deal announcement alone, without real boots on the ground, does not count. The recent headlines provided are about Ukrainian drone strikes on targets inside Russia, which relate to the broader war but do not directly describe fighting around Novyi Donbas or movement along that part of the Donetsk frontline. There is no specific news in what was provided about this village or intersection. To watch: any ISW updates or frontline reports describing Russian advances toward or into Novyi Donbas would be the most relevant thing to follow. Ground conditions in this part of Donetsk can shift slowly or suddenly, and a single village intersection is a very small, precise target, making it genuinely hard to forecast. The pace of Russian advances in this region has varied widely over the past two years. A ceasefire or peace negotiation could freeze or redraw lines at any moment, and its exact terms would matter a lot for how this resolves. The market prices the October outcome at 38% and the August outcome at 19%, reflecting real uncertainty about timing even if the direction of pressure is clearer.
