Iran successfully targets shipping by...?: how this market works
What you need to know
This market asks whether Iran's own military will physically attack or seize a commercial ship before the deadline. A Yes means Iranian forces directly hit a cargo, tanker, or other civilian vessel with a missile, drone, bomb, or by forcibly boarding it. A No means that does not happen. The key word is 'commercial': only civilian ships count, not warships. And it must be Iran itself acting, not groups it supports like the Houthis. It resolves Yes if credible reporting confirms that Iranian forces, not proxy groups, directly strike or board a commercial ship before September 30, 2026 at 11:59 PM Iran time. A missile that is intercepted and never hits the ship does not count, even if debris causes damage. If an incident happens but who did it is still unclear at the deadline, the market can stay open three extra days; if attribution is still uncertain after that, it resolves No. The most relevant recent news is Iran threatening to target US warships over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping chokepoint, alongside a Trump warning to Iran about a 'last chance' for a deal. These headlines show rising tension around the strait in early August 2026. They do not confirm any attack on a commercial ship has happened, but they signal that the geopolitical environment is actively heated, which is directly relevant to how this might unfold. The main difficulty is that this question sits at the intersection of military capability, political calculation, and diplomatic pressure, all of which can shift fast. Iran has reasons both to act and to hold back, depending on how negotiations or confrontations develop. The attribution rule adds another layer: even if an incident occurs, proving it was Iran directly, not a proxy, could be genuinely ambiguous. The market currently prices Yes at 84% for the full period, so the main uncertainty is really whether the less expected outcome, no qualifying incident, occurs.
