Iran successfully targets shipping on...?: how this market works
What you need to know
This market asks whether Iran's own military forces will physically attack or seize a commercial ship on a single specific date. Yes means Iranian forces directly hit a cargo or civilian vessel, or forcibly boarded and took control of one, on that day. No means nothing like that happened, or it happened but was carried out by a proxy group like the Houthis rather than Iran itself. The key word is 'commercial': warships don't count, and neither do attacks by Iran-aligned militias acting on their own. It resolves Yes only if, on the specific date listed, Iranian forces directly strike or board a commercial ship, and credible news reporting confirms it was Iran, not a proxy. A missile that gets intercepted before hitting the ship does not count, even if debris causes damage. If there is genuine doubt about timing or who did it at the end of that day, the market can stay open up to three extra days. If the attribution still cannot be confirmed after that, it resolves No. The date is measured in Iran local time, UTC plus 3 hours and 30 minutes. The most relevant news from early August 2026 is that US-Iran negotiations around the Strait of Hormuz appear active, with Oman reportedly mediating talks in their final stages, even as Iran publicly rejected a claim by Trump that a deal had been reached. Separately, reports of a deadly US airstrike inside Iran add tension to the picture. Active diplomacy could reduce the chance of an Iranian military provocation, but the reported airstrike creates a reason for Iranian escalation. Both forces are pulling in opposite directions. The core difficulty is that this is a one-day question inside a very fluid geopolitical situation. Diplomacy and military escalation are happening at the same time, and either could shift dramatically overnight. Beyond that, the resolution criteria are unusually strict: proxy attacks, intercepted missiles, and unconfirmed attributions all resolve No. So even if violence occurs near a ship, it might not qualify. The market moved from 56% down to 45% in just a few days, which shows how quickly the picture can change and how genuinely uncertain participants find it.
