Will Russia capture Kucheriv Yar by...?: how this market works
What you need to know
This market asks whether Russian forces will take control of a specific road intersection inside the village of Kucheriv Yar, in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region, by a set deadline. Kucheriv Yar is a small settlement in an active conflict zone. A 'Yes' means Russian troops physically occupy that exact crossroads. A 'No' means Ukraine still holds it, or the front line has not reached it, by the cutoff date. There are two deadlines with separate odds: August 31, 2026 (7%) and October 31, 2026 (28%). The market is settled using a specific map published daily by the Institute for the Study of War, a U.S.-based conflict research group. If that intersection is colored red on their map, meaning Russian control or advance, and that coloring holds through the next full daily update, it counts as a 'Yes.' One important edge case: 'infiltration areas' shown in a different shading do NOT count. Real physical control must be established, whether through combat or a negotiated agreement that results in actual Russian presence on the ground, not just a political announcement. None of the recent news provided is directly relevant to military activity around Kucheriv Yar or the Donetsk front line in this area. One headline worth noting is that the U.S. is stepping back from leading the NATO Ukraine aid coordination group, which is the kind of broader development that could affect Ukraine's resupply and defensive capacity over time, but there is no specific reporting on this intersection or village to point to. Front-line movement in this part of Donetsk has been slow and grinding, which is why the August deadline sits at just 7% while the October one reaches 28%. The core uncertainty is the pace of Russian advance, which depends on ammunition supply, Ukrainian defensive strength, weather, and whether any ceasefire or negotiation changes the situation entirely. Map updates from ISW can also lag behind real events by hours or days. The gap between the two deadlines shows clearly that the timeline matters enormously here.
