Will USD hit ___ Iranian rials by August 31?: how this market works
What you need to know
This market asks whether the US dollar will cross specific exchange rate thresholds against the Iranian rial before August 31, 2026. Iran's currency is tracked here through a free-market website called Bonbast, not the official government rate. There are three separate sub-questions: will the dollar rise above 2.0 million rials, rise above 2.1 million rials, or fall below 1.8 million rials? A 'Yes' on the upward ones means the rial got weaker; a 'Yes' on the downward one means the rial got stronger. Each sub-market resolves Yes if the dollar hits or crosses its target price on even a single day before August 31, 2026, according to the daily free-market rate published on Bonbast. Bonbast reports prices in Iranian toman, and one toman equals ten rials, so the numbers are converted accordingly. A day's figure is only considered final once the next day's figure is published. The market does not need the rate to stay at the threshold, just touch it once. If Bonbast permanently goes offline, a different source will be chosen. The news this week points to rising tension around Iran. Reports describe Iran preparing a military strike, a cargo ship being hit in the Strait of Hormuz, and conflicting signals about US-Iran peace talks. These kinds of geopolitical shocks often pressure a country's currency. Separately, uncertainty about sanctions or negotiations tends to drive activity in Iran's free-market exchange rate. These developments are directly relevant because political and security stress is one of the main forces that moves the rial. Iran's exchange rate is genuinely hard to forecast because it responds to many unpredictable forces at once: US sanctions policy, diplomatic talks, regional military events, and domestic inflation. The current news shows active tension on multiple fronts, but situations can de-escalate quickly too. The market prices the two upward thresholds (rial weakening) at around 56 to 59%, which is only modestly above a coin toss, reflecting real uncertainty. The downward threshold (rial strengthening) is also priced around 56%, suggesting participants see both directions as genuinely open right now.
